The alter-ego of The Mad Hatter, Jervis Tetch was a talented neuro-scientist and part time haberdasher who, from an early age had a deep-seated obsession with Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Believing himself to be the Mad Hatter incarnate, he styled himself after the character, quoting the book on a regular basis.
He developed an unhealthy desire to find his “Alice,” targeting, stalking and kidnapping young blonde women he found to be attractive; killing them when they no longer lived up to his ideas of who Alice is to him.
